Historically, photographers only concern technically speaking, was to provide images that were sharp and correctly exposed. With a digital workflow there are the added responsibilities of image processing and providing image files that are not only correctly exposed and sharp, but are colour accurate from capture to print. I have embraced the digital era wholeheartedly from the very beginning. It allows me total control over the way an image looks and has many benefits for you as a client.
I have always loved working with Nikon camera equipment. These days I use Nikon digital cameras and the highest quality Nikon Professional lenses. I always capture images in the RAW format and process the files in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. The advantage of shooting RAW is that the files can be reprocessed at any time without any destructive impact on the image…….unlike working with Jpeg files.
Lightroom has significantly speeded up the processing of RAW files. Your files are stored in the Lightroom Library and can be exported at any time in a format that suits your requirements.
I use the latest Apple Mac Intel computers. I have a 30” Apple Cinema Display which is calibrated on a fortnightly basis using an Xrite Eye One device. Image files are tagged with the appropriate colour profile…..usually ‘Adobe RGB 1998’……but if you are working with a specific CMYK profile, I can work with that and supply your images as print ready files tagged with that colour profile.
As a general rule I do not sharpen images unless requested to do so by a client. It is important to sharpen images just before they go to print…the amount of sharpening depends on the final print size. It is too easy to over sharpen a digital image and it never looks great. There are many differing theories about sharpening but my preferred method is to sharpen the Lightness Channel with the image in Lab Mode and then convert it back to RGB. This avoids colour fringing which also never looks great!
